Day 3: Trek Day 2 – The Heather & Bamboo Ridge
- Route: Nyabitaba Hut → John Matte Hut (3,505m).
- The Experience: Descend to the Kurt Shafer Bridge (confluence of Bujuku and Mubuku rivers). From here, the trail gets technical. You’ll climb through bamboo forests and enter the Giant Heather Zone, where trees are draped in “old man’s beard” moss.
- Terrain: 7 hours. Steep, rocky, and often muddy.
- Highlight: Your first view of the Margherita Glacier from the Nyamuleju rock shelter.
Day 4: Trek Day 3 – The Bigo Bog Experience

Day 5: Trek Day 4 – The High Alpine Push
- Route: Bujuku Hut → Elena Hut (4,541m).
- The Experience: A steep ascent through “Groundsel Gully.” You will use a metal ladder to navigate a particularly steep rock section before branching off toward Elena Hut—the highest basecamp on Mount Stanley.
- Terrain: 4 hours. Rocky, cold, and high altitude.
- Highlight: Reaching the rocky ledge of Elena Hut, where you are literally in the clouds.
Day 6: Trek Day 5 – THE SUMMIT CHOICE (Stanley Massif)
- The Mission: Wake up at 2:00 AM. Under headlamps, you’ll head onto the Stanley Plateau.
- Your Choice: Depending on your prior booking, you will tackle:
- Margherita Peak (5,109m): Requires crossing the Margherita Glacier and a short technical scramble.
- Alexandra/Albert/Alexander: Routes vary from glacier traverses to steep rock scrambles.
- Descent: After the summit, you will drop down to the Scott-Elliot Pass and descend to the Kitandara Lakes.
- Terrain: 10–13 hours. Snow, ice, and rock.
- Highlight: Sunrise over the Congo from the roof of Africa.
Day 7: Trek Day 6 – The Freshfield Pass
- Route: Kitandara Lakes → Guy Yeoman Hut (3,505m).
- The Experience: A steep climb to Freshfield Pass (4,282m). You’ll walk through an alpine desert of moss and rock. This is often the most scenic day for mountain photography.
- Terrain: 6 hours. High pass crossing followed by a long descent.
- Highlight: Panoramic views of the mountains you just climbed to the North.
Day 8: Trek Day 7 – The Cliffs & Waterfalls
- Route: Guy Yeoman Hut → Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m).
- The Experience: The trail follows the Mubuku River. You will descend the steep Cliffs of Kichuchu (using ladders/careful steps) and cross the river several times through bamboo forests.

- Highlight: Passing the majestic Kabamba Waterfalls.
