Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Bwindi & Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences in Africa. It offers a rare opportunity to observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural rainforest habitat. Uganda is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it one of the best destinations for this life-changing adventure.

This experience takes place in two iconic national parks: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both parks are located in southwestern Uganda and offer guided trekking experiences led by experienced rangers and trackers.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dense rainforest and incredible biodiversity. It hosts several habituated gorilla families and offers the highest number of gorilla trekking opportunities in Uganda.

The park is divided into four main trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each sector provides a unique trekking experience depending on terrain, forest density, and gorilla family location.

Trekking in Bwindi can take anywhere from one to eight hours depending on the movement of the gorillas. Once located, visitors are allowed to spend one hour observing them in their natural environment.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park but offers a very scenic and intimate gorilla trekking experience. It is located within the Virunga volcanic region and features bamboo forests and dramatic volcanic landscapes.

The park is home to one habituated gorilla family, making trekking here more exclusive and less crowded compared to Bwindi.

Mgahinga also offers a unique opportunity to track golden monkeys, a rare primate species found only in this region.

Gorilla Trekking Experience

Gorilla trekking begins early in the morning with a briefing from park rangers. Visitors are then divided into groups and assigned to specific gorilla families.

The trek involves hiking through thick rainforest terrain, guided by trackers who follow signs such as nests, feeding areas, and footprints.

Once the gorillas are located, visitors are allowed one hour to observe their behavior. This includes watching them feed, interact, groom each other, and move through the forest.

The experience is strictly controlled to protect the gorillas and ensure minimal disturbance.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Golden monkey tracking is available in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These primates are known for their bright orange fur and energetic movement through bamboo forests.

Tracking them involves a guided hike through the bamboo zone, where visitors can observe their playful behavior and social interactions.

Minimum age for trekking is 15 years.

Trekking duration ranges from one to eight hours depending on gorilla movement.

Visitors spend a maximum of one hour with the gorillas once located.
